APPEARANCE

Height:5'10Hair Color:Blond
Build:leanEye Color:Brown

Conway is of about average height and lean. He doesn't have a wide muscle mass, but he still has a strength, and his build lends itself more to endurance than show. He looks young for his age, and doesn't really have any distinct sense of dress. He likes to wear jeans and graphic t-shirts. When he has to wear the uniform, he wears it, but ends up loosening or losing his tie halfway through the day. He's not much of a fan of the uniform. He has no specific style for his hair, either. Conway is disheveled in a way that it's obvious he showers and understands personal hygiene, but also in a way that it's obvious he doesn't care too much about his own appearance so long as it's clean.

He has a thin tattoo of a heartbeat signature along the outside of his forearm, nearly the the entire length of his forearm.

PB: Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Conway has an offputting demeanor. He's not very approachable. He doesn't look approachable, he doesn't act approachable. He has a level of comfort in himself that enables him to not be very social because he kinda just doesn't give too much of a shit about making friends, or a good impression. He doesn't care if you think he's mean; he's mean at least fifty percent of the time anyway.

By his look, he definitely probably has a chip on his shoulder, something to prove. He doesn't come from money. He doesn't like when people, especially his mother, pretend that he does. He believes he still has the mentality of a blue collar borne child, even though his family has had money since he was about five. He thinks there's more success in being blue collar, because you earn what you get. It isn't handed to you. Because of that, he came into this school with a narrow, hard edged need to succeed both academically and physically. This school has no short cuts or lotteries or class pets. You put in the work, you earn the outcome. It's very defined, and he appreciates that.

However ... Conway can't really be called a nerd either. He works very hard and he's very good at nerdlike categories, such as science. But Conway is the kid that you ask to shoot firecrackers at you when you want to hit them with a bat. He's the kid that's never heard a double dog dare he was ever tempted to turn down. He's embarrasingly fearless and even more reckless. He's not social, but he can definitely be the life of the party. If you want a story to tell to your grandkids, you let Conway be a horrible influence on you, because he's an asshole, but he's also a fun one. When he feels like it.

Conway also has a bit of a temper. He likes those hot emotions like anger. He isn't great at stewing on things that piss him off, he's not great at censoring himself. He's not really great at expressing himself or talking about himself in any form of analytical way. He knows who he is, he just doesn't want anybody else to. He wants to be the kid that does great in a fight, that fights with conviction and without fear. He doesn't want people to start getting the wrong idea and start believing he's got any of those soft emotions, like actual fear or compassion, even though he does. He doesn't necessarily view them as weak, he just views them as things other people are allowed to have, but things he never allowed himself to have. He's wrong, but he believes it very strongly. He doesn't handle conflict very well. His first instinct is to always punch the other person in the face. Which is likely why he rarely has a conflict with a female, because that's just not a viable solution in that situation, so he eliminates the possible situation.

Which means, he also eliminates things that could cause a conflict, such as dating, or having serious emotions. He sleeps around frequently, without strings, without hang ups, without any real desire to build something more serious with the other person. But he also doesn't allow that easiness to interfere with what he's here to do at this school. Which is fight things. Fight things always comes first.

SKILLS

[Spanish:] Conway took Spanish, from the age of about five. He speaks it fluently, and due to his exposure to the hispanic culture, he also speaks it fairly comfortably. Even though he started learning it at a young age, he believes it's kinda pretty important to learn America's second language.
[Athleticism:] He's a natural athlete. He didn't really have to try hard. He adapts fairly well to sports, even sports he's never played, so long as he understands the rules of the game. He has good hand-eye coordination and seems aware of how to move his body to achieve whatever he needs to in any kind of athletic situation. He's done other things to help, such as remaining in shape, etc, but most of that is still required at this school.
[Music:] Conway has about the normal interest in music, but for a solid ten years, he learned how to play the piano, so that is something he can actually do, and something he hasn't done in front of people a single time since he's been at Finchwood. So he knows how to read sheet music, he knows how to organize songs into structures, and can play the piano itself pretty well. When he goes home, he still plays the piano and practices but it's not really high on his priorities while at school, given everything they do here.

HISTORY

Family:

  • Connie Loxton: | Mother | Full-Time Pageant Mom
Conway has an uneasy relationship with his mother, because he thinks she's shallow, but also because she focused so hard on forcing her own daughter into what he thinks is a shallow competition for shallow people.
  • Hank Loxton: | Father |
Lottery winner. Conway has a better relationship with him but it's not great.
  • Carrie "Coyote" Loxton: | Older Sister | Bar Owner | 24

The eldest Loxton child, and a firecracker that left home as soon as she turned 18. Cookie and Coyote fought constantly - partially because, at their core, they're so similar in how driven and sharp they both are. She's currently instituting a methodical takeover of a lot of local Madison bars. She's got business savvy and no shame, and will bulldoze whoever she needs to to make her dreams come true. Her communication with her siblings is spotty, but affectionate when it happens. Conway has a soft spot for Coyote.
  • Hadlee Loxton: | Younger Sister | Junior | Coins
He's close to Hadlee in an antagonistic, normal sibling way. Deeply invested in her wellbeing, but perpetually incapable of acknowledging that.
  • Quincey Waller: | Cousin | Junior | Cups
Not super close to Quincey. Has a normal, antagonistic cousin relationship. Not super invested in his wellbeing, but enjoys spreading benign, confusingly accurate rumors about what Quincey enjoys doing in his spare time.

Hometown: Madison, Wisconsin

Okay so, Conway was born in Wisconsin. His early life was embedded in a working class, moderately poor society. He lived in a mobile home that was cramped for five people. He has very vague, unclear memories of that time, but when he was five, his father won the lottery and they moved out of the mobile home into Madison.

Conway's life was punctuated by very few things. It was a surprisingly uneventful kind of life. He went to public school and grew up with money. He got very heavy into sports, and became invested in basketball, football and hockey. He has a normal, semi-closish relationship with his younger sister, as a product of still living with her and the closeness in their ages. He still feels protective of her. He has a more distant relationship with Coyote, their older sister, due to age, and the fact that she moved out when he was eleven. He has a soft spot for her, but there's a seven year age difference so they're almost living in different worlds now.

While his mother focused very hard on pageantry and Hadlee, her focus on him was more miscellaneous. She pressured him into learning the piano because that felt like a prestigious instrument to learn. She hired tons of private tutors, but as he got older, his disposition toward them grew more hostile, and the turn over rate for piano tutors was pretty high. He figured it'd make her lay off and let it go, but for whatever reason, his mother continued finding and hiring piano tutors, likely because she didn't want to allow him to win. So he continued going.

Conway and his mother has a volatile relationship that grew more embedded the older he got. At any given time, they were embroiled in some kind of conflict. One day it would be him being a direct catalyst to ruining Hadlee's pretty clothes, the next day it would be his attitude in front of other pageant moms and how poorly that reflected on Cookie, then a week later it would be his piano tutor quitting abruptly. It's hard to tell why. It's possible because this was Conway's only direct relationship with his mother. She never focused on him more than she did when she was angry at him. When he wasn't messing something up, she tended to mostly ignore him. At least, that was how she summed up his rebellious behavior. She believed he did it for attention.

Conway and his father had a better relationship, even if it is somewhat mediocre. They don't have a deep, personal connection, but Conway respects his father more, and tends to act out a lot less in his direction, so they're capable of having actual conversations, even though most of those conversations are shallow and done mostly in passing. His father didn't seemed to care too much about learning a musical instrument or how long or studiously Conway practiced that musical instrument. He seemed to support Conway playing sports and caught what games he could. Conway tended to go to him when he needed a permission slip signed or a physical at the start of every game season, or money for trips.

And it was his father who he went to when he read about some weirdo rich guy opening a tuition free school. He doesn't actually need a tuition free school; his parents still had money. But the fact that the school had no tuition, no actual external requirements that would cost his parents anything, made asking them to send him to a boarding school more feasible. So he did. He made up some shit about how he wanted academic freedom and shit, but it was mostly because going to a boarding school was insanely appealing to him. So Conway brought it to Hadlee, talked about it with her, told her he was going or he was going to die trying, and then he prepared an obnoxious, ridiculous presentation of all the reasons he should be allowed to go and presented it to his father. Reasons included: "Imagine how funnier your jokes will be if you have more time without us to perfect them??" and "Your father's day gifts will be baller when we miss you".

The presentation was entirely unnecessary. He could've just asked his dad to send him to some boarding school, and his father likely would've.

Of course, once he got there, he learned that this school existed for a more ridiculous reason than just educating a bunch of kids for free. He learned about the shadow world and fighting it, and all of that shit. He didn't entirely believe it, but he passed the entrance exam. He summoned a persona, he saw it with his own eyes, and he couldn't deny the existence of the reality that was being revealed here. He couldn't exactly walk away from it either, because in normal high school, USA, all he could do was play hockey, pass physics exams and go on to some bullshit college and do the same shit all over again - but here? Here he could fight shadows in some demon realm. It wasn't entirely the greater good that drew him in. It was how cathartic fighting something physical felt for him. He likely would've stayed for the greater good of things too, but actually battling evil.... what teenager actually had the power to say no to that?

After enrolling, Conway did plan to go about this differently than he had in Madison. Before this school, he was a moody teenager. He was a cliche. He did mediocre in class, played sports, and fought with his parents. He wanted to be different here. So he changed the way he did classes. He actually cared and took notes and studied for tests.

On summer break, he went home and worked at a crappy diner and picked back up the relationship he'd always had with his parents, but his natural demeanor shifted slightly. He seemed less moody, less argumentative, lighter in a way, as if he'd matured in his year away.

While he'd neglected his piano ability during his initial year at Finchwood Academy, he did practice when he came back home for summer, as if slipping on a pair of gloves to see if they still fit. At the start of senior year, Conway decided to audition for Music class in an attempt to ensure his ability to play the piano didn't deteriorate further during his final year at Finchwood.

Element: Fire

ACADEMICS

Core Classes: English, Mathematics, Science*, Social Studies*, Training

Elective Classes: Shop, Computer Science, Leadership, Music

Clubs: Athletics, Community Outreach

General Performance: Conway does fairly well in class. Academics doesn't come as naturally to him as athletics do, but he works pretty hard at it. He takes precise, immaculate notes in his chicken scratch, he studies, he tries hard at every homework assignment. He listens and pays attention in class and has no urge to skip. School isn't fun for him, but he knows it's important to succeed so he views it as a stepping stone to the rest of his life. If he ditches this stepping stone, the rest of his life is fucked, basically. He enjoys science and social studies because he does well at them. His mind can pick them up pretty easily, but of course his favorite class will always be training. His least favorite is English because he could not give less of a shit about expressing himself in writing.
